abstract

The age structures of four wooded stands, representing a range of pine and oak forests on a Maryland serpentine area, were sampled. Ring counts from increment borings showed distinct age clusters in three of the stands. These indicated past episodes of recruitment, which may reflect disturbance of the stands by fire or drought.
